Albert Edward Hayes was born 1883 in Bishop's Stortford, the son of George and Sarah Hayes but wasn't baptised until 29 October 1895 at Holy Trinity Church, Bishop's Stortford.


On the 1891 Census he was living with his family at Back Row, Bishop's Stortford and they had moved to Jervis Road, Bishop's Stortford by 1901. On the 1911 Census he was a boarder with Richard and Emily Irons at 24 East Street, Saffron Walden, Essex, and working as a labourer at a sewage works. 


He married Annie Claxton in early 1917 in Edmonton. They adopted Arthur Frederick Thorpe, born 27 November 1912.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Waltham Abbey, Herts and served in the Royal Garrison Artillery, 144th Siege Battery. He died of wounds on 27 November 1917.

Additional Information

His widow, Annie received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £6 4s 11d. She also received a pension of £1 5 shilllings a week from 17.6.18. She later lived at The Splash, Colney Heath, St Albans, Herts and remarried in 1918 to James Gardiner.
