Pre War
Sidney was born in Harpenden on 28 Feb 1887 to Ashram Hawkins, bricklayers labourer, and Lizzie (nee Harborne).
On the 1891 census the Family were living at Chapel Row, Harpenden. On the 1901 Census they were living at Heath Road, Harpenden and Sidney was employed at an India Rubber Factory. On the 1911 Census Sidney gave his occupation as a carman.
Wartime Service
Sidney enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 18345 in the 7th (Service) Battalion and went to France with the Battalion on 26 Jul 1915.
They were deployed on the Somme in the area of Bazentin-le-Petit when Sidney was killed in action on 17 Sep 1915.
Additional Information
His father, Mr A Hawkins, Waters Cottage, East Common, Harpenden, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: “GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN”.
