Redbourn Town Memorial

Pre War

Born in 1890 in Bury Mill, Redbourn, Herts. son of Henry (the miller) and Julia Isabel Hawkins. He was a steam roller driver and was unmarried.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at St. Albans on 8 Apr 1916 as Private G/34896 16th Royal Fusiliers. He requested a transfer on 1 Jul 1916 to the Army Service Corps M.T. at Southampton but this did not happen. Entered France on 4 Oct 1916 and was transferred to 7th Royal West Kent Regiment. Injured in action by a bullet wound to the right thigh and shoulder on 19 Nov 1916 at Le Treport but returned to duty on 15 Jan 1917. Promoted to Lance Corporal on 28 Mar 1917. Killed in action.
