Pre War
Son of Richard and Emily/Emma (nee SEABROOK) HAWKINS.
His parents married 24 January 1880 at Holy Trinity, Leverstock Green, Herts. Richard died 1931 in Watford aged 74, and was buried 1 January 1932 in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford; Emily died 1949 in Watford aged 93, and was buried 22 November, also in Vicarage Road Cemetery.
Joseph was born 6 March 1881 in Leavesden, Herts, and baptised 17 April 1881 at St Paul’s, Langleybury, Herts.
On the 1881 Census, aged one month he lived in Leavesden, with his parents and no siblings. On the 1891 Census, a scholar aged 10, he lived in Leavesden Green, with his parents and three siblings. On the 1901 Census, a builder’s carter aged 20, he lived in Watford, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1911 Census, a stableman aged 31, he lived in Elstree, Herts.
Recorded as born in Watford (believed more accurately to be Leavesden) and enlisted in London.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in London; was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914 Star medals, his qualifying date being 11 September 1914, and died of wounds received in action.
Additional Information
Unfortunately, Joseph’s Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing.
