Pre War

James was born in St Albans in 1895 to George Hawes, labourer, and Emma (nee Lambourn).


By the 1901 Census the family were living at Wheathampstead Road , Harpenden. On the 1911 census they were living on Heath Road, Harpenden and James was working as an office boy at a Rubber Works. James had 1 elder and 1 younger brother. There were 4 sisters.


In 1915 James married Minnie Perrin, they lived at 39 Lower Dagnall Street, St Albans and had a daughter Gwendolene.

Wartime Service

.James enlisted in the Bedfordshire Regiment as Private 33500. He joined the 8th battalion in France.


On the night of 4 Mar 1917 the Battalion were entrenched at Maroc near Loos. They were engaged that night in Trench repairs but had casualties of 2 other ranks killed and 2 wounded. James was one of those casualties.

Additional Information

War Gratuity of £4 and arrears of £3 6s 8d was paid to his widow.
