Pre War
Richard John Hatton was born in Diamond End, Kings Walden, Hertfordshire, on 12th June 1895 the son of David Hatton (B 1868 in Watford, Herts) a Game Keeper and Adelina (nee Hill) Hatton (B 1873 in Watford, Herts).
Baptised at St Mary’s Church, Kings Walden, Herts on 21st October 1895.
He attended Breachwood Green National School from June 1899 to June 1909, leaving aged 14.
1901 Census records Richard aged 5, living with his parents, Brothers George 9, Arthur 2 and sister Dora 7, at Diamond Lodge, Diamond End, Kings Walden, Herts. By 1911 Richard now aged 15 had left school and was working as a Farm Labourer, living at home with his parents, brothers Arthur 12, Alfred 5 and sister Eleanor 9, at Lawrence End Lodge, Kings Walden, Herts.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Luton, Beds, posted to the 8th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment with the service No 203674.
Richard was Killed in Action on Saturday 11th August 1917, aged 22, he has no known grave and is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial to the fallen, Ypres, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.
Additional Information
His effects of £4-3s-0d, pay owing and £3 War Gratuity went to his father David Hatton.
