Pre War

Ambrose was born on 25th July 1885 in High Wych, Hertfordshire. One of ten Children born to Ambrose and Elizabeth Stowers.

In 1911 he was living in High Wych with his parents and siblings and working as a Woodman on an Estate.

Wartime Service

Ambrose joined the 7th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment and along with the rest of the Battalion arrived in France, via Boulogne, on the 26th July 1915.

The 7th Beds were in the 54th Brigade of the 18th (Eastern) Division. As part of the Battle of The Somme the Battalion took part in two successful attacks on the 1st and 14th July 1916, then on the 17th orders were received to attack the Village of Guillemont, but these were cancelled on the 18th as the Battalion had suffered such heavy casualties in the two previous attacks. They then spent the rest of the 18th under shell fire and at 4pm the Cookhouse was hit by a shell and some casualties were sustained, Ambrose may have been one of the casualties. He is buried at Peronne Road Cemetery and was aged 29.

It should be noted though, that where Ambrose is buried was also the site of a major field hospital, therefore Ambrose could have died of wounds received from an earlier action.
