Charles was born in Sawbridgeworth in November 1894 and was baptised in January 1895. He lived with his family at 2 Bell Yard, Bell Street, and in 1911 was recorded as a ‘General Farm Labourer’.


Charles was living in Sawbridgeworth when he enlisted in Hertford.

Wartime Service

He was formerly 5706 in the Hertfordshire Regiment, meaning that he enlisted after 1st November 1915. he may well have been conscripted in 1916. Charles was later transferred to the 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment.


Charles’ date of death is given as 17 February 1916. On that day, the Battalion were involved in a major attack towards Miraumont and a feature called ‘Hill 130’. They formed a defensive flank to the left which allowed the capture of another feature called ‘Boom Ravine’. It was here that Charles was killed. He has no known grave, his body was lost and he is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial. He was aged 22.
