Arthur James Harwood was born in 1893 in Baldock, Hertfordshire, the son of Lizzie Harwood.
On the 1901 Census Arthur was living with his widowed grandmother Esther and his mother at Norton Street, Baldock. They remained in Norton Street in 1911 at which time Arthur was assisting his mother in a grocery business.
He married Elizabeth Maud Milton in early 1915 in the Biggleswade district.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in July 1916 and went to France in December of that year. In September 1917 he was sent home with a poisoned hand but on recovery was returned to the trenches in December.
Arthur died of his wounds at the No. 4 Casualty Clearing Station on 13 January 1918, aged 24.
Additional Information
His widow received a war gratuity of £6 and pay owing of £7 5s 5d. She also received a pension of £1 0s 5d a week and gave her address as Upper Caldecote, Biggleswade, Beds.
