Pre War

Frederick was born on 13 December 1886 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire and baptised on 7 January 1887. His parents were Frederick William and Lydia Harvey (née Olney).

In 1891 the family were living at 5 Bucklesbury, Hitchin. Present were both parents: Frederick (30) and Lydia (30), with Frederick (senior) working as a hairdresser. Their children were: Frederick George (6), Charles William (4) and Lilly Florence (2).

By 1901 the family had moved to 30 Bucklesbury, Hitchin. Where Frederick (senior) was working from his home address as a hairdresser and tobacconist and an employer. Present were both parents and of their children: Frederick, Lily and Gladys (4).

By 1911 Frederick (junior) had left the family home and at 24 was a shop assistant, working at a large store Lewis & Godfrey Limited, King St, Stroud, Gloucestershire and living there, with many others.

Wartime Service

Frederick was recorded as formerly in Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment) but attached to the 113rd Coy. Chinese Labour Corps, with as Acting Company Serjeant Major 311194.


He was accidentally killed while serving in France and  buried in Plot 2, Row B, Grave 10 in the Lille Southern Cemetery in France. 

Additional Information

After his death £49 4s 11d was authorised to go to his mother Lydia on 30 July 1919, which included a war gratuity of £32. Later, another payment of £2 went to his mother on 18 December 1919.

His pension cards record Lydia, his mother, as his next of kin/dependant, living at 30 Bucklesbury, Hitchin. The card records that the application for a pension was refused.

His mother ordered his headstone inscription, while living at 30 Bucklesbury, Hitchin. It reads "Until we meet again, Mother". He is also commemorated on a headstone in Hitchin Cemetery, on which is written:

TO THE BELOVED MEMORY OF
SGT. MJR. F. G. HARVEY. BORN DEC 13TH 1886 DIED IN FRANCE APRIL 4TH 1919,
INTERRED IN COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
