Pre War

George James Hart was born at Buckland Common, Bucks, in 1886, the son of David and Rachel Hart and baptised at Bovingdon, Herts on 4 April 1886. (N.B. Buckland Common, although in Bucks is only about 5 miles away from Berkhamsted.)


On the 1891 Census the family were living at The Cottages, Broadway, Bourne End, nr Berkhamsted and his father was working as a Farm Labourer. They remained there in 1901 by which time both 15 year old George and his father were working as Carters. 


By the 1911 Census, George had moved out of the family home and was boarding with James and Hannah Answell at 3 Halls Cottage, Seven Hills Road, Iver Heath, Weybridge, Surrey, and working as a Farm Labourer. 


He married Marguerite Lillian Hyde in Eton, Bucks in 1912 and they lived at Willoughby Road, Langley, Slough, Bucks.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Slough and served with Royal Field Artillery, D Anti-Aircraft Battery in France.


He died on 3 May 1917 from wounds received in action, probably during the Battle of Arras, and is buried at the St Nicolas British Cemetery near Arras which was used by the field ambulances stationed there. 

Additional Information

His wife, ordered his headstone inscription: "NEARER MY GOD TO THEE". His widow received a war gratuity of £3 and pay owing of £4 2s 9.
