John Henry Wright was born in 1900 to Henry Wright, carpenter, and Sarah Anne (nee Neale).

On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Julia Margaret, (born 1888) and John Henry were living with his grandfather John Wright at Caddington, Markyate, Beds. Mother Sarah Anne died in 1894.

John Henry’s father married Sarah Turner on 16 Sep 1897.

On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Julia Margaret, Ellen Elizabeth (born 1892), John Henry and Archibald Frederick were living at Chapel Lane, Markyate.

0n the 1911 Census the Family of parents, Father Henry (Coal & Wood dealer) Sarah (assisting in the Business) Julia Mary, John Henry (now a carpenter), Archibald Frederick, Millicent (born 1902) and Leonard (born 1904) were living at Luton Road, Markyate. There was also a boarder Ernest Wright, a hat blocker.

Wartime Service

No Service Record was found. John Henry enlisted at Bedford in Mar 1915 as Private G/ 42238 in Duke of Cambridge’s Own (Middlesex Regiment. The National Roll Record for J H Wright of 11 Luton Road states enlistment in Mar 1915 and service from in Egypt, which is incorrect as 11 or 12 Battalions Middlesex served only in France & Flanders.


It is not known when John Henry joined 11 (Service) Battalion, Middlesex but in Nov 1917 they were engaged in the Battle of Cambrai (20 Nov=3 Dec 1917) and John Henry was wounded. He died from his wounds on 25 Nov 1917.


Additional Information

War gratuity of £7 10s and arrears of £53s 11d was paid to his father.
