Pre War
Son of Thomas and Sarah/Mary (nee HIBLING) WRIGHT of Peterborough, Northants; husband of Minnie (nee OLDMEADOWS) WRIGHT of Watford.
His parents married 1 May 1837 at St John’s, Peterborough. Thomas died 1884 in the Peterborough district aged 65.
James was born 1864 in Peterborough, and married 1889 in the Brighton, Sussex, district; they had 12 children. Minnie never remarried, she died 1950 in Watford aged 81, and was buried 20 April in Vicarage Road Cemetery, Watford.
On the 1871 Census, aged 7 he lived in Peterborough, with his father and four siblings. On the 1881 Census, he is proving elusive. On the 1891 Census, of no occupation aged 25, he lived in Bushey, Herts, with his wife and one child. On the 1901 Census, a cab driver aged 35, he lived in Hammersmith, London, with his wife and three children. On the 1911 Census, a house painter aged 45, he lived in Ladbroke Grove, London, with his wife and five children.
Wartime Service
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 18 March 1915, and died at no. 5 Stationary Hospital, Dieppe.
Additional Information
*1 His wife’s address was recorded after his death, so it is possible that he has no direct connection to Watford. More research is required. Unfortunately, James’ Service Record appears to be one that did not survive the World War Two bombing, neither does he have an entry in Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-1919.
