William Alfred Starr was born on 20 April 1887 in Romford, Essex, the son of James and Ellen Starr and baptised there on 22 May 1887. 


On both the 1891 and 1901 Censuses, the family were living at Waterloo Road, Romford, where his father was working as a Brewer's Labourer.


His father died in 1902.


Not found on the 1911 Census, but was said to be resident in Chadwell Heath, Essex on Soldiers Died in the Great War list.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in St Albans and served as a Rifleman with the 9th Battalion, King's Royal Rifle Corps.


He was killed in action at the Somme on 24 August 1916 during the attack on Delville Wood. He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, 

Additional Information

His brother James received a war gratuity of £6 10s and his other siblings, Arthur, Eliza, Sarah, Annie, Nellie and Herbert shared his pay owing of £3 6s 9d with James.
