Pre War

Horace Davidson was born in 1879 in Hammersmith, Middlesex/London, and was a resident of Aldenham, Herts, He joined the Royal Artillery on 24 February 1897 and was initially posted to Gibraltar for 2 years. After this he was posted to South Africa, where he served from 22 January 1900 until 17 July 1900. He was then shipped to North China to serve with the British forces during a period known as the Boxer Rebellion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boxer_Rebellion


Horace returned to the UK via Hong Kong in March 1902, where he was promoted to Corporal. His Army career ended on the 7 October 1902, when he returned to civilian life. He later married Agnes Maud Davidson.


During his first period of service he was Gunner 18877 Royal Artillery, His service ended on the 7 Oct 1902 when he paid £18 for premature voluntary release (PVR). £9 of which was refunded to him on 29 Jul 1916 after he re-joined.

Wartime Service

Horace enlisted at Watford, Herts, posted to the Royal Engineers with the service number 283635.


He died on 3 November 1917, of wounds he received in action, aged 38 and he is buried in the CWGC Nine Elms British Cemetery, Poperinge, Belgium.

Additional Information

Agnes was awarded a widow’s pension of 50/- a week from 13 May 1918. The value of his effects was £6-14s-10d, Pay Owing and £8-10s-0d, War Gratuity which went to his widow Agnes.
