Pre War

Alfred was born on the 14th March 1879, in Colliers End, Herts. The son of James and Sarah Wren. He was Baptised on the 25th March 1879 in High Cross, Herts.

He married Harriet Camp on the 5th August 1905.

The 1881 Census records shows Alfred aged 2, living with his parents, 2 brothers and 3 sisters at Turnpike Road, Standon, Herts. and 1891 as at school, living with his parents, and 2 brothers in Colliers End, Standon, Herts. In 1901 Alfred the aged 22, was living with his uncle in Colliers End, Standon, Herts. His occupation is given as a Roadman. In 1911 as aged 32, he was recorded as married with 2 children, living in Colliers End, Standon, Herts. His occupation is given as a Roadman.

Alfred enlisted in Hertford and at the time was recorded as living in Ware.

Wartime Service

Initially he served with the 2nd Battalion, Hertfordshire Regiment, with the service number 4309. He was later transferred to the 8th Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, with the service number 235279. Alfred died of his wounds on the 9th April 1918.

CWGC records list him as “Son of James and Sarah Wren, of Colliers End, Ware, Herts: Husband of Harriet Wren, of Colliers End.”
