Richard George Harradine (known as Dick) was born on 14 May 1894 in Ickleford, Herts, the son of Alfred Harradine, a carpenter, and Louisa and was baptised on 17 Jul 1894 at St Katherine's Church, Ickleford. 


On the 1891 Census the family of parents, Florrie (born 1884), William (born 1887), and Emily (born 1889) were living at Peirsons Yard, 5 Park Street, Hitchin.


On the 1901 Census the family of parents, Emily, Rose (born 1893). Dick (Richard George), Bert (born 1897), May (born 1900) and Minnie (born 1901) were living at Charlton, Hitchin.

Wartime Service

Dick enlisted in Hertford , giving his address as Meadow Way, Letchworth, as a Territorial Soldier in the 1/1st Hertfordshire Yeomanry about late Aug 1914 (serial 1772 was issued on 2 Sep 1914) and served as Private 1763. The 1/1st was part of The Eastern Mounted Brigade and having volunteered for overseas service  sailed for Egypt on 10 Sep 1914. They became part of the Yeomanry Mounted Division on 19 Jan 1915 and were detailed for Dismounted Troops and went to join the Gallipoli Campaign, landing at Suvla Bay  on the night16/17 Aug 1915 and becoming 5th Mounted Division. The division participated in the Battles of Suvla Bay: the Battle of Scimitar Hill and the attack on W Hills on 21 August 1915. It sustained heavy casualties, of which Dick was one of the wounded and although he was evacuated he died on 27/28 Aug 1915. His records state he was buried at sea presumbably aboard Hospital Ship.


 He was sent to Egypt and served from 6 November 1914. The following year they moved to Gallipoli where he was wounded in action and died at sea on 27/28 August 1915, aged 21, from his wounds (probably on a Hospital Ship ‘Arcadian’). (N.B. records differ as to which day). He  has no known grave and is commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli, Turkey.

Additional Information

His pay owing was divided between mother Louisa, brother Bertie and sister Rosie and a War Gratuity of £3 was divided between his mother Louisa and sister in law Eliza Annie. (date of death given as 27.8.1915 on Register of Soldiers Effects).


(His mother's address on pension records was 17 Union Road, Hitchin, Herts and later lived at 12 Salisbury Avenue, Stanford le Hope, Essex).


Pension records exist but give no indication of the amount of pension received, if any.
