Fred Wooldridge was born in 1897 in Wandsworth, London to Albert and Rhoda Wooldridge. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living in Wandsworth where his father was a carpenter. By 1911 they were living at 7 Garratt Lane, Wandsworth. His father was an undertaker's porter and Fred was still at school. On enlistment on 6 November 1914 he was living at 114 Chatham Road, Northcote Road, Clapham Junction. He married Minnie Phillips at the Baptist Chapel, Bishops Stortford on 14 April 1918. She later lived at 36 Bartholomew Road, Bishop's Stortford. 

Wartime Service

He enlisted at on 6 November 1914 at Clapham Junction and served with the He enlisted at Clapham Junction and served with the 23rd Battalion, London Regiment, initially under Reg no. 3317 and was put on reserve as he was only 16 years 11 months on enlistment. 


He left Southampton for France on 25 May 1916.  He suffered gunshot wounds to his face, chest, thigh and left arm and was repatriated to England on 24 July 1916.  He was then in hospital until 25 August 1916 and was said to have made good recovery and sent back to the front.  He was appointed paid Lance Corporal on 1 January 1917 but reverted to Private on 25 June 17.


He was killed in action. 

Additional Information

Widow Minnie received a war gratuity of £18 and pay owing of £7 10s 3d. She also received a pension of 13s 9d a week from 31 March 1919.
