Caryl Davey was born in Dedham, Essex on 30 Mar 1895 to Thomas Rowe Davey, mining engineer, and Amy (nee Downing) and baptised at St Mary the Virgin at Dedham, Essex on 15 August 1895.His parents married by special licence on 30 April 1890 in St Martin in the Fields, Westminster.
However, on the 1901 Census Amy, although stated as married, was living on her own in the Street, Mill Lane, Dedham, Essex, with Caryl and Amiee (born 1892, Quebec, Canada), Annie Eulalia (born 1893) and Stephen G (born 1894).
On the 1911 Census, Caryl was working as a golf caddie living at 32 Hockerill Street, Bishops Stortford with his mother, Aimee (stationer’s assistant), Annie E, and Stephen (also a golf caddie). His father is not listed and his mother is living on 'private means'.
Wartime Service
He enlisted at Bishop's Stortford as Private 5956 in early Dec 1915 and served in the 14th (County of London) Battalion London Regiment (London Scottish) a Territorial Force formation.
He went to France on 22 Jun 1916 with 2/14th London Scottish as part of 60th Division. In Nov 1916 the Division was transferred to the Salonika Front and took part in the Battle of Doiran 24-25 April and 8-9 May 1917.
Caryl became a corporal at some time in his service and became serial Number 512203 in the Territorial renumbering in 1917. In Jul 1917 the Division was again transferred to Palestine and took part in the Battle of Gaza (30 Oct- 7 Nov 1917) and the Capture of Jerusalem (8-9 Dec 1917). It was on 8 Dec 1917 that Caryl was killed in action.
Additional Information
Unusually there are two records relating to the soldier's effects. One states he was an unpaid Lance Corporal and his mother received a War Gratuity of £8 10s and arrears of £3 19s 10d. The other states he was an acting Corporal and shows his mother received 17s 9d arrears 9(additional pay from period of promotion).
Brother Stephen served with Bedfordshire Regiment and was killed in action on 18 July 1917.
