Pre War

Herbert enlisted in Middlesex in Oct 1910 as a Private TF/1187  in 1/8 Battalion Middlesex Regt as a Territorial soldier.

Wartime Service

Following the outbreak of The Great War Herbert volunteered volunteered for Overseas Service, the Battalion was posted to Gibraltar  on 9 Sep 1914 and returned to UK on 15 Feb 1915. On 9 Mar 1915 he went to France with his Battalion joining the BEF.  He was reported Missing after action on 26 Apr 1915 at Zonnebekke, Ypres.
