Biography
The following text was transcribed from the The Edmundian (1814-1819) – The contemporary magazine of St Edmund’s College:
Frank Woods, who fell in action on July 15th, was one of the brothers who came to St. Edmund's in the presidency of Mgr. Crook. Born in 1877 he entered the College in 1885 and remained here for nine years.
In course of time he entered City life and was a member of the Stock Exchange when Lord Roberts made his appeal to City men to join up soon after War was declared. Frank Woods answered that appeal by joining the 10th Royal Fusiliers as a Private, and in that capacity he was content to serve, without seeking for the commission that might well have been his. As he was advancing with his machine gun in the attack on Pozieres on July 15th he was killed instantaneously.
His Colonel wrote to the bereaved family to say that he "had formed a great regard for him," that he here himself gallantly and died like a soldier for his King and Country and was greatly loved by all. "None could need a fine epitaph.
The sympathy of all Edmundians will go out to his mother and family.
