Arthur Woodrow was born in 1890 in Hethersett, Great Melton, Norfolk the son of Elizabeth and George Woodrow. On the 1901 Census the family were living at Bylaugh Lodge, Melton Magma, Norfolk. 


His mother later lived at Great Melton, Norwich.

Wartime Service

He enlisted at Bedford and served with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 30 July 1915.


Arthur was killed in action on 15 July 1916 during the Battle of Bazentin Ridge (part of the 2nd phase of the Battle of the Somme) when they were  attacking Pozieres from trenches south of Contalmaison and were held up by hostile machine guns. 


The war diary for 15 July 1916 suggests that 35 men were killed or missing that day with another 183 wounded.


Arthur was initially buried near where he fell but at the end of war his body was exhumed and reburied in Pozieres British Cemetery, Ovillers-la-Boiselle, France.

His father received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £8 14s 5d,


Pension cards exist but give no indication if a pension was granted or how much was paid.


Arthur Woodrow's connection with Tewin is not known, but it is likely that he worked on one of the large estates nearby, such as Pansanger or Tewin Water.
