By 1911 they had moved to Berkhamsted and were living at 'Hazelcroft', [16] Boxwell Road. Leonard was then a 14 year old scholar and his father was working as an architect for the Local Government Board.

He was educated at Berkhamsted School and left in 1913.

Leonard enlisted with the Inns of Court Officers Training Corps as a Lance Corporal (Reg. No. 1707), and served in Egypt in the signalling service with the ANZACS, later obtaining a commission with the Royal Engineers and rising to the rank of Captain.

He was then attached to the Royal Flying Corps from 8 December 1916. He was promoted to Flight Commander and Captain and flew many times over German lines.
