Pre War

Frederick was born in 1895 in Rickmansworth the son of Albert and Rosa (nee Elbourn) Harding. His father was a Blacksmith and in 1901 the family was living at 6, Norfolk Road, Garden Terrace, Rickmansworth. By 1911 they had moved to 109 Norfolk Road and Frederick was a Grocer’s Apprentice.

Recorded as enlisting in Hornsey, Middlesex.

Wartime Service

Formerly No 4566 7th Middlesex Regiment and 292652 the Cheshire Regiment.

The 13th Battalion was raised in Cardiff on the 23rd of October 1914 and landed Le Havre in December 1915 as part of 114th Brigade 38th (Welsh) Division. They served on the Western Front throughout the war.

Frederick was killed in action at High Wood during the Battle of Albert in August 1918. 114th Brigade attempted to pass north of Delville Wood but were held on the line of the Flers-Longueval Road.

Monies due to Frederick at his death were paid to his father.


Frederick is also commemorated on his family’s grave in Rickmansworth (Chorley Road) Cemetery. His part of the inscription reads:

ALSO OF FREDERICK ALBERT HARDING, [13TH WELSH REGT] NEW PARAGRAPH
SON OF THE ABOVE
KILLED IN ACTION IN FRANCE, AUGUST. 27TH 1918 AGED 22 YEARS
