Arthur James Leonard Woodcock was born in 1899, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of Francis John Woodcock a Wheelright and Emily Woodcock (nee Stuart). One of seven children although 1 died in infancy.


No 1901 Census for Arthur and his family was found.


1911 Census records Arthur’s parent, his three sisters and brother John, living at 93 & 95 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts, no Census record for Arthur was found. 

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted in the Royal Fusiliers, posted to the 13th Battalion, with the service number G/81824. Later transferred to the Royal Sussex Regiment, with the service number G/19229.


His Medal Index Card (MID) shows he was awarded the British War and Victory medals indicating he served overseas. No other information was found of his military service. He died in the Middlesex Hospital, Edmonton, on 22nd November 1919. He is buried in Cheshunt Burial Ground, Bury Green Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Grave Ref; 4. L. 

Additional Information

His effects of £13-19s 12d, went to his father Francis John Woodcock.


His Headstone inscription “GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS” was requested by Mr. F. J. Woodcock, 141 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts. His father.
