Pre War

Percy George Darton was born on 7th July 1897 in Cottered and baptised on 29 Aug 1897.

In 1901 Percy was still living in Cottered with his mother and father Hannah and David and elder brother and sisters Florence, Albert and Elsie. By 1911 the family had moved to Gaylors Farm, Westmill, Buntingford, where Percy was working as an errand boy for a local builder.

Wartime Service

Enlisted at Hertford also 5943 Bedfordshire Regiment and died in Germany in the prisoner of war camp in Kassel.

Additional Information

The CWGC gives the information recorded above, however the medal roll index card suggests that he was 5943 of the Hertfordshire Regiment and then 266987 of the Bedfordshire Regiment. Percy’s name is also inscribed on the memorial to his Mother and Father.

Percy is also commemorated on a headstone in Westmill (St. Mary) Churchyard. The inscription is difficult to read, but it does confirm that he died as a prisoner of war aged 20.
