Pre War
Bertram was born in 1895 in St Ippolitts (not Hitchin) and his parents were Charles and Martha Darton (née Catteral).
In 1901 the family were living 8 Moorlands Avenue, Dewsbury, Yorks . Present were both parents: Charles (45) and Martha (47), with Charles and working as a greengrocer. Their children were: Minnie (17), George (15), Grace (12), Alfred (8) and Bertram (5).
By 1911 the family were living at 25 Waverley Terrace Dewsbury. Present were both parents, Charles still a greengrocer. The census recorded they had been married for 33 years with 8 children, of whom 1 had died. All of the children listed above were still present, Bertram was now 15 and working as a butcher – as was his older brother Alfred.
Bertram met Rebecca Stott and they had a a daughter Mary born 10 March 1914. They then married on 23 May 1914. Later a son Wilfred was born on 5 December 1916.
Officially he was recorded as born in Hitchin, Herts. and enlisting in Dewsbury, Yorks. However, various census reveal Hitchin to be more accurately St Ippolyts.

Bertram first served as Private 204649, 2/4th York and Lancaster Regiment and later as Private 325021, with the 1/7th West Riding Regiment, and it was with them he was wounded, evacuated to Boulogne and there died of wounds.
