Born on 6th May 1888 in Hertford and baptised on 15th Jul 1888 in St Andrew’s Church, Hertford son of Joseph Francis and Elizabeth Wood.
Wartime Service
Enlisted in Hertford and after training went to France, joining the battalion at the end of April 1915. On the 16th May they took part in the Battle of Festubert, from 11th May until 19th the battalion suffered almost 400 casualties. The following month they fought at Givency. They were in trenches at Festubert again before moving to Bellerive training for the next big attack, which was the battle of Loos. This began for the battalion on 25th September, and during the next week they suffered over 45 men killed, one of them being William.
