George Handscombe was born on 20 March 1895 in Baldock, Herts, the son of Caleb and Mary Handscombe, and was baptised on 28 April 1895 at Baldock. He was one of four children, although one died in infancy.


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Clark's Lane, Baldock, where his father was working as a journeyman baker. They had moved to High Street, Baldock by 1911, at which time George was working as a  baker's roundsman.  


His parents later lived at 48 High Street, Baldock, Herts.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hitchin, Herts and he is said to have initially joined the Hampshire Regiment, reg. no. 27094.


He was transferred to the 5th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers and died (probably from illness) on 29 September 1917 at the 49th or 68th General Hospital in Salonika, aged 22. He is buried in Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece.

Additional Information

His parents jointly received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £11 15s 8d.


No pension appears to have been paid.
