Pre War
Son of Thomas Hudson and Mary (nee MATTHEWS) WOOD.
His parents married 1866 in the Amersham, Bucks, district. Thomas died 1918 in the Watford district aged 73, and was buried 9 November at Holy Cross, Sarratt, Herts; Mary died 1927 in Watford aged 83, and was buried 22 February, also at Sarratt.
George Emmett was born 1876 in Sarratt, and resided in Watford.
On the 1881 Census, a scholar aged 4 he lived in Sarratt, with his parents and five siblings. On the 1891 Census, an agricultural labourer aged 14, he still lived in Sarratt, with his parents and four siblings. On the 1901 Census, a bricklayer’s labourer aged 23, he was a boarder in Watford. On the 1911 Census, a bricklayer’s labourer aged 28 [sic], he was still a boarder in Watford.
Officially recorded as born in Sarratt and was living in Watford when he enlisted in Whitehall. Middx.
Wartime Service
He attested 8 November 1915 in Whitehall, London, for Short Service (Duration of the War) in the Royal Army Service Corps: a labourer aged 41, 5’4½” tall, his next-of-kin Alice SOUTHWOOD of Watford. He served at Home 8 November to 5 December 1915, and with the B.E.F. from 6 December 1915.
He died at No. 13 General Hospital, Boulogne, of an accident – knocked over by a pony and cart causing fracture of the skull and cerebral haemorrhage. A Court of Enquiry into the death was held 8 November 1917.
He was entitled to the Victory, British War and 1914-15 Star medals, his qualifying date being 6 December 1915.
