Pre War

Charles Leonard Wood was born in June 1891, in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, son of Joseph Wood a Carpenter and Annie/Ann Wood (nee Burgess) (Widow Annie/Ann West, nee Burgess, was Joseph’s third wife, they married in March 1891). Charles was the eldest of their three children.


1901 Census records Charles aged 9 living with his parents, half-brother John Wood (14), sister Rose (7) and brother Frederick (4) at 183 High Street, Cheshunt, Herts.


Charles attended Dewhurst Endowed boys’ school, Cheshunt, from May 1900, leaving in July 1905, to go to work.


1911 Census, Charles (19) is working as a Nursery Garden Hand, living with his parents, half-brother John and brother Frederick, still at 183 High street, Cheshunt.


His father Joseph Wood died in late 1911, aged 77.


His mother Annie/Ann Wood died in June 1914, aged 61.


We believe Charles married a, Emily Brown in 1915, the marriage was registered in Edmonton, Middx.  

Wartime Service

Charles travelled to the County Town of Hertford to enlist, posted to the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) and issued with the service number G/52318.


On completion of his training, he was sent to France, arriving on the 4th February 1917, with 24th Battalion, he was transferred to the 2nd Battalion, on the 20th March 1917. He was presumed dead, killed in action on 3rd December 1917. He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France, to the missing. Panel 3 & 4.
