Edmund Richard Hanks was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, in 1897, son of Thomas Edmond Hanks a, Carpenter and Joiner and Elizabeth Jane Hanks (nee Royer). One of seven children although one died in infancy.
1901 Census records Edmond aged 3, living with his parents, and three sisters Eleanor (9), Ada (5) and Florence (1) at, 10 Prospect Road, Cheshunt, Herts.
1911 Census records Edmond (as Richard) aged 13, at school, living with his parents and three sisters Florence (11), Grace (9) and Phyllis (8 months) at, 181 Crossbrook Street, Cheshunt, Herts. His mother is recorded as a Tobacconist.
Wartime Service
Edmund enlisted at Edmonton, Middx, posted to the Duke of Cambridges Own (Middlesex) Regiment, with the service number L/15617.
On completion of his training, he was sent to France arriving on 30th September 1915, seeing action on the Western Front. He was Killed in Action on 15th July 1916, during the Battle of the Somme. (1st July – 18th November 1916).
He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial to the missing in France.
Additional Information
His mother Elizabeth received a Dependents Pension of 7/- a
week from 1st May 1917.
His effects of £2-5s-4d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of
£6-10s-00d, went to his father Thomas.
