Pre War
Albert Edward Handscomb was born in Bishop's Stortford on 6 September 1879 to George and Emma Handscomb and baptised at St Michael's, Bishop's Stortford on 28 November 1979.
On the 1901 Census he was living with his widowed father and brother Alfred at Basbow Lane, Bishop's Stortford and remained there on the 1911 Census, when he was living alone at 5 Basbow Lane, Bishop's Stortford and working as a domestic gardener.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Bedford and served in the Bedfordshire Regiment. The 2nd Battalion were active in trenches in Agny and Arras in the days prior to Albert's death.
His death at the No. 30 General Hospital in Calais suggests that he was due for evacuation to England for further treatment but died beforehand.
Additional Information
A war gratuity of £3 was awarded to his friend Ann Mason, as well as his pay owing of £5 5s 6d.
