Pre War

Herbert Wombwell was born in 1899  in Thriplow, Cambs, the son of Eli and Elizabeth Wombwell.  


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Middle Street, Thriplow where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. By 1911 they had moved to High Wood Hall, nr Leverstock Green, Hemel Hempstead, Herts, where his father was working on the farm and Herbert was a scholar.


His parents lived at Princes Terrace, Sawston, Cambs at the time of Herbert's death and later moved to Rectory Farm Fulbourn, Cambs. 

Wartime Service

Herbert enlisted in Watford and served with the Machine Gun Corps in France. Herbert was posted to the 51st Machine Gun battalion of the 51st Highland Division.


They went into action at 8.00 am on 20 July 1918 and Herbert was seriously wounded and transferred to a base hospital where the died from his wounds the following day.  He is buried in Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.

Additional Information

His father, Mr Eli Wombwell, Rectory Farm, Fulbourn, Cambs., ordered his headstone inscription: " SLEEP AND REST WE LOVE YOU WELL BUT JESUS LOVES YOU BEST". His brother Walter served in the Royal Garrison Artillery. His father received a war gratuity of £4 10s and pay owing of £7 0s 1d. He also received a pension of 5 shillings a week from 6 November 1918.
