Herbert was the only son of the Rev. William Frederic Tucker Hamilton (Vicar of Cromer) and his wife Maud, born in Eastbourne on the 18th of September 1892. 


He was educated at St. Clare at Walmer, and Trinity College, Cambridge, graduating a B.A. in June 1914.


Herbert married Muriel Dora Wakley in Tring on the 28th of January 1915.

Wartime Service

He was gazetted 2nd Lieut. on the 19th of September 1914 and promoted Lieut. 23rd of January 1915. He went to France in September 1915 and was reported wounded and missing after the attack on Hill 70 at the Battle of Loos, later assumed to have been killed in action.
