Pre War

Walter was born in 1880 in Buntingford to Henry and Mary. In 1891 they lived in Garden Road, Buntingford. On the 9 January 1909 he married Eliza Jane Pollard in Stepney, London.


On the 1911 census they were listed as living in Thrift Cottage, Westmill and they had a son who was under one month old.

Wartime Service

He enlisted 9 December 1915 at Buntingford. His occupation was listed as postman. He was originally listed as being in the 4th Battalion Essex Regiment then transferred to the 18th Essex Regiment.


He was discharged on 19 March 1919 as no longer physically fit for war service. He was sent back to a Military Hospital in Great Yarmouth on 16 December 1918 where he was diagnosed with TB. He was then transferred to Norfolk War Hospital in Thorpe, Norwich on 20 December 1918. He was discharged on 19 March 1919 to his home. He died on 2 August 1919 and his death was registered in the Ware registration district. 


Although he died after the war he is not remembered on the war memorial, but does have a Commonwealth War Grave which is at Layston Church.
