Thomas William Winter was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1896, the son of Harry and Mary Winter, and baptised on 20 May 1896 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of ten children.
On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses the family were living at 4 Back Lane, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a general labourer. Thomas was working as an errand boy in 1911.
His mother died in 1911 aged 43.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Berkhamsted and served with the Hertfordshire Regiment in France from 6 November 1914. His regimental number of 2106 suggests he enlisted in 1913 into the territorial force and was called up at the outbreak of war.
Thomas was killed in action on 1 August 1916 and is buried in Brown's Road Military Cemetery, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £12 16s 1d.
Miss H Winter, 4 Back Lane, Berkhamsted, Herts. ordered his headstone inscription, which reads: "PEACE PERFECT PEACE".
Brother to Sydney Joseph Winter who was killed in action in 1918.
Pension cards exist in respect of Sydney and his brother Thomas but the amount paid is not shown.
