Sydney Joseph Winter was born in Berkhamsted, Herts in 1897, the son of Harry and Mary Winter, and baptised on 21 July 1897 in Great Berkhamsted. He was one of ten children. 


On the 1901 and 1911 Censuses the family were living at 4 Back Lane, Berkhamsted where his father was working as a general labourer.


His mother died in 1911, aged 43.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford and initially joined the Hertfordshire Regiment under reg. no. 4675, in early 1915, later transferring to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 


Sydney was killed in action on 23 October 1918 in France and is buried in Mazinghein Communal Cemetery, France.

Additional Information

His father received a war gratuity of £21 10s and pay owing of £30 17s 6d. A Miss H Winter, 4 Church ?, Berkhamsted, Herts., ordered his headstone inscription: "GONE BUT NOT FORGOTTEN".


Brother to Thomas William Winter who served with the Hertfordshire Regiment.


Pension cards exist in respect of Sydney and his brother Thomas but the amount paid is not shown. 


N.B. Although Sydney's name is spelled with a 'y' on some records, his birth was registered using Sidney with an 'i'.
