Pre War

Born 1883 in Whelford, Gloucestershire. Son of John Winter and Elizabeth Winter. The 1891 census shows him aged 7, living in Coates, Gloucestershire. In 1901 he was working as a footman at Purton in Wiltshire (transcribed as Pery). The 1911 census shows him aged 29, single and living at Sprangwell, Ware, Herts. His occupation is given as a domestic butler for a Mr. Percival who was a land agent. It is believed that is how he met his wife, Harriet, who was also in service in the same house. Percy married Harriet D Jones in 1915 in Cirencester, Gloucestershire.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Hertford. Initially he was Corporal 225303 Percy Winter in the Northamptonshire Regiment. He was later transferred to the 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment, as Corporal 203966 Percy Winter. In some records he is also associated with the Suffolk Regt (service number 31232). He died of wounds in the military hospital on the 15th November 1917.
