Haileybury College Cloister Wall Memorial, Hertford Heath

Pre War

Born on 27 Jun 1861 in Plymouth, Devon son of Lt. Gen. Henry Meade Hamilton C.B. and Henrietta Mary Borrowes Hamilton. Educated at the United Services College 1875-78. Served in Burma, Egypt and in the South African War 1899-1902 and was Military Secretary to General Lord Kitchener 1900-05. Lieutenant Colonel and A.D.C to the King in 1902.

Wartime Service

Appointed General commanding 3rd Division at the outbreak of war and was killed by artillery fire during the race to the sea while surveying the front line. He was buried in France, but was later exhumed and returned to England. He was the first Divisional Commander to be killed in action in WW1.

Additional Information

United Services College, Westward Ho, Devon amalgamated with Imperial Service College in Windsor in 1912 and then moved to Haileybury College, Hertford Heath in 1942.
