Pre War

Charles  Reginald Winkley was the eldest son of Rev Charles Richard Thorold (Retired Bengal chaplain) and Amy (nee Underwood). He was born in Nowgong, Central India on 9 Dec 1893.


He attended Aldenham School. On leaving school entered National Provincial Bank of England (now Natwest) and then Hong Kong & Shanghai Banking Corporation (now HSBC) both in Central London. He was 19th out of 700 in the Institute of Bankers Examination.

Wartime Service

He joined Inns of Court OTC as Private in May 1915.  Gazetted as 2nd Lieutenant 9 Oct 1915 to Sherwood Foresters He went to France May 1916 with 15th (Notttingham) Battalion.


Killed in action 20 July 1916 while leading an attack.
