Pre War
Not a lot is known about Herbert’s early life other than he was born in Bedmond, Herts in 1892.
The 1901 Census records Herbert aged 9, boarding with widow Mrs. Caroline Wearing and her daughter Frances at The Green, Sarratt, Herts. Also boarding with Herbert was 10-year-old Richard Gulston. 1911 Census records Herbert aged 20, single, and in the army, serving with the Army Service Corps, Stationed at Bulford Camp, Salisbury, Wiltshire.
His service number was S/27157 and trade - Baker. The CWGC record states that he served for 7 years in Gibraltar.
Wartime Service
Again not a lot is known about Herbert’s war service, at some time he was transferred from the Army Service Corps, to the Tank Corps with the new service number 317763, he held the rank of Corporal.
Herbert survived the war, and in 1918 He married Maud Louise Pitts, the daughter of Arthur Edward Pitts, a Baker and Sophia Pitts, of Kings Langley. Herbert was also working as a Baker by trade.
He died on 5 January 1920, of a Haemorrhage caused by a stomach ulcer, he was buried on 10 January 1920, in All Saints Churchyard, Kings Langley, Herts.
Additional Information
His widow Maud was refused a War Widows Pension on 28 January 1921, her address at the time was Mrs. M. Hall, c/o Mrs. Pitts, Langley Hill Cottages, Kings Langley, Herts. ( Her father's address) ' Maud's brother Private 39579 Arthur Sidney Pitts, of the Gloucestershire Regiment was Killed in Action on 20 September 1917, he is commemorated on the Kings Langley Memorials.
