Ernest George Hall was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire on the 9th October 1888, son of George Hall a, Carman (Driver of a Horse Drawn Vehicle) and Emma Hall (nee Tinley). Believed to be one of nine children.

His parents George Hall and Emma Tinley were married at Saint Botolph, Bishopsgate, City of London, on the 7th November 1880.

He was Baptised on the 9th December 1888, in the Parish of Cheshunt, Herts.

1891 Census records Ernest aged 2, living with his parents, sisters Florence (8), Rose (4), and Caroline (6 months) in, Hatton Road, Cheshunt, Herts.

He attended St Mary’s Infant School, Cheshunt, from April 1892 to June 1896.

1901 Census records Ernest (as George) aged 12, living with his parents, sisters Ellen (Rose) 14, Caroline (10), Millicent (2), brothers Edward (8) and Harry (8 months) at, 5 Hatton Road, Cheshunt, Herts. Brother Harry Hall was born in late 1901.

Ernest enlisted in the Kings Shropshire Light Infantry in 1909, issued with the service number 9161.

No 1911 Census was found for Ernest.

His father George Hall died in the early part of 1918.

Wartime Service

At the out-break of war the 2nd Battalion, Kings Shropshire Light Infantry was stationed at Secunderabad, Telangana, India. They returned to England in November 1914, arriving at Plymouth, and moved to Winchester, joining the 80th Infantry Brigade of the 27th Division. They were mobilized for war landing at Le Havre, France on 21st December 1914.

They deployed with the 27th Division to Solonika on the 16th October 1915, arriving there on the 4th December 1915.

Ernest died of Malaria on 4th August 1917, he is buried in the CWGC Mikra British Cemetery, Kalamaria, Greece. 

Additional Information

His effects of £14-19s-6d, Pay Owing and his War Gratuity of £17, went to his Mother Emma Hall.

His younger brother Private 9442 Edward Thomas Hall, Died on the 8th August 1916, of wounds received in action.

Both brothers have the same Headstone inscription “BE OF GOOD CHEER” requested by their mother Emma Hall.

He is recorded as G. Hall on both Cheshunt Memorials.
