Pre War

Lewis Daniels was born in Southill, Bedfordshire in 1886, the only son and eldest child of William and Annie Daniels (nee Robinson).

On the 1891 Census the family were living in the village of Southill, where his father was working as an agricultural labourer. They remained in Southill in 1901 at which time 15 year old Lewis was working as a stockman on a farm. He married Phoebe Muncey of Wrestlingworth, Bedfordshire in 1907 and they had five children, William (1908), Elsie, (1912), Winifred (1914), Ronald (1916), Gladys (1919).

He was educated at Merchant Taylors School, Ashwell and at the time of enlistment he lived in Station Road, Ashwell, and was working as a cowman on a farm.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Bedford and served with the 9th Battalion, Norfolk Regiment as part of the 71st Brigade, 6th Division.

He was killed in action on 21 October 1918 and is buried in Highland Cemetery, Le Cateau, France. (N.B. pension cards suggest he was initially reported as missing).

Additional Information

His widow Phoebe received a war gratuity of £5 and pay owing of £5 3s 8d. She also received a pension of £1 17s 11d a week for herself and her children.

Phoebe later remarried in Ashwell in 1923 to William Barton.
