Rickmansworth UDC Memorial, St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour, Rickmansworth

James Wilson was born on 25 July 1884 in Rickmansworth, one of 7 children, son of David and Sarah Wilson. In 1891 the family were living at 4 Calving Terrace, Norfolk Road and David, his father was working at a paper mill as a labourer.


In 1901 they lived at Riverside Cottages, Norfolk Road, Rickmansworth. In 1911 they lived at 114 Norfolk Road and James was working as a general labourer.

Wartime Service

James Wilson enlisted at Watford in May 1916 and, after a brief training, was sent to France. He fought in the Battles of Ypres and Arras and was killed in action in August 1916.


The National Roll of the Great War states that he was in the Sussex Regiment. He is also recorded as being in the Sussex Regiment on the St Mary’s Roll of Honour, Rickmansworth.

Additional Information

His soldier’s effects of £3 4s and War gratuity of £3 were left to his father, David. His younger brother, Private George Wilson, was killed in action on 28 December 1914 and is also commemorated on Rickmansworth UDC memorial and on the St Mary’s Church Roll of Honour.


James was the eldest of 4 brothers, who all fought in WW1. 2 came back, 2 did not.
