Pre War
John Wilson was born in 1893 in Great Berkhamsted, Herts. the son of Edwin and Elizabeth Wilson.
On the 1901 Census, the family were living at 12 Frithsden, (Nettleden with Potten End Parish), Berkhamsted Rural. They remained at the same address on the 1911 Census, by which time John was working as a Groom Gardener (Domestic), along with his older brother Augustus. He was employed at Potten End Vicarage.
Wartime Service
He enlisted in Hertford and served with the 6th Battalion, Bedfordshire Regiment in France from 26 July 1915.
He was killed in action on 9 August 1916 during the Battle of Pozieres and is buried at the Caterpillar Valley Cemetery, Longueval, France.
Additional Information
His father received a war gratuity of £9 and pay owing of £7 18s 10d. Pension cards exist but give no indication if any pension was received.
Brother of Augustus Wilson who died of wounds on 14 August 1917 and is buried at Brandhoek New Military Cemetery, Belgium.
