Pre War

George Kirby Wilson was born in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire, on 4th February 1888, son of Walter Knibb Wilson a, Hosier and Elizabeth Vianna Wilson (nee Allaker).


Walter was Elizabeth's second husband, her first husband John Bulbeck died in 1882, she married Walter on 7th July 1883, at Holy Trinity Church, Richmond, Surrey.


George was Baptised on 22nd April 1888, in Cheshunt, Herts, with his brother Percy Millard Wilson, (Born 3rd January 1885).


1901 Census records George aged 13, living with his widowed mother Elizabeth in the Village of Matching, Essex. They have two boarders Jack H Lester aged 13 and Sidney Kitteridge aged 9.


No 1891 or 1911 Census for George was found. 

Wartime Service

George enlisted in Peckham, London, posted to the East Surrey Regiment and issued with the service number 14422. He was later transferred to the Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) and issued with a new service number 12162. 


George was Killed in Action on 30th July 1916, aged 28, during the Battle of the Somme (Battle of the Somme 1st July – 18th November 1916). He has no known grave, he is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France, to the missing. Pier and Face 5C and 12C.

His effects of £4-17s-04d, pay owing and his war gratuity of £3. We were unable to positively identify the recipient in the Register of Soldiers Effects (Edith ? ?).
