Pre War

Alfred Hale was born in Redbourn on 5 Jul 1873 to George Hale, a railway labourer, and Ann (nee Bonnick).


On the 1881 Census the family had moved into Harpenden. Alfred enlisted as Private 6935 in the Royal Marines Light Infantry and went for initial training at Walmer Depot on 5 Sep 1892.


He was transferred to Chatham Division on 29 Apr 1893 and then on various detachments and shore establishments ashore at Chatham and Sheerness.


Alfred married Alice Garnham on 9 Sep 1900 and made a home in Rochester, Kent. He transferred to Fleet Reserve on 13 Apr 1907, and in 1911 re-enrolled in the Reserve.

Wartime Service

Alfred was recalled to service on 2 Aug 1914 and on 10 Oct 1914 was transferred to HMS Hyacinth, light cruiser, on the Cape of Good Hope Station, Africa until 11 Oct 1917.


He was assigned to Chatham Division from 12 Oct 1917 until 31 Jan1918. His service record states service at HMS President (Royal Naval Reserve) from 1 Feb 1918 to his death which is from accidental injuries on 15 Feb 1919. There is no indication of service on SS Wisbey nor Italy station on his record.

A War Gratuity of £26 10s was paid.
