Pre War

Francis William (Frank) Gurney was born on 3 November 1895 in Fenny Stratford, Buckinghamshire, the only son of Frank Washington and Ellen Elizabeth Jane Gurney and one of three children. He was baptised on 25 December 1895 in Bletchley, Bucks. 


On the 1901 Census the family were living at Duncombe Street, Fenny Stratford where his father was working as a railway goods guard. They remained in Fenny Stratford in 1911 at which time Francis was working as a painter's labourer for a coach builder.  


At the time of enlistment he was living in Shenley at The Stables, Porters Park and may have been working as a groom.

Wartime Service

He enlisted in Norwich in September 1914 and joined the Norfolk Regiment, joining the 9th Battalion in France from 22 December 1915. 


Frank was killed in action on 15 September 1916, aged 20.  He has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France.

Additional Information

His mother received a war gratuity of £8 10s and pay owing of £10 9s 1d. She also received a pension of 5 shillings a week.
