Pre War

Arthur was born in1894 St James, Westminster to Bartholomew Guinan, a boot and shoemaker, and Catherine (nee Collins).


On the 1891 Census they were living at Berwick Street, St James, Westminster, London. On 1901 census the family were living in St Pancras, London. By the 1911 Census the family were in Betterton Street, London WC and Arthur was working as a printer’s labourer.

Wartime Service

Arthur enlisted as private 25727 in 6th Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment.


On 28 Apr 1917 during the Battle of Arras the 6th Battalion Beds attacked Greenland Hill, the attack was only partially successful as they came under heavy cross fire. When they retired there were only 58 survivors. Although Arthur’s date of death is given as 29 Apr 1917 this may have been the date he was recorded as missing.


He is remembered on the Arras Memorial.

Additional Information

War gratuity of £5 was paid to his brother James and arrears of £ 7 8s 7d was shared between his Father and brothers Francis, James, Christopher and sister Bridget Beamish.
